Software Documentation (or any kind of documentation, for that matter)

I’m currently working on a new project, and one of the first few deliverables is a software specification document. And I realize that I get stuck on documentation not because I don’t know what to put on it, but that I don’t know where to put it. So, I’ve decided to dump everything on to the document, and reorganize the content later on. This really makes sense to me, and I hope that someone has made a best practice out of this, to write out content for documentation first, followed by organization, layout and ‘trimming’… because it’s far easier to remove and move stuff around that’s there, than to linearly write a document.
