a night of fun

The chinese mooncake festival is here, and we invited the GHM youth over to my place for a lantern party. I haven’t played with lanterns since I was a kid, so I was quite keen on this.

I don’t know if I was more excited about the lanterns or about making nacho dip. I haven’t had nacho dip for a long time, and it’s really hard to find plain unflavored nachos and ready made cheese dip. The cheese dip wasn’t too difficult. I managed to get the recipe from the internet. Actually there are tons of cheese dip recipes, but I went for the plain and simple one, and it really worked well. I got all my ingredients from Tesco.

Anyway, the party arrived early, and I think it was good since they helped to set up and we started eating around 7ish. It started to drizzle a bit, and overcast skies didn’t signal a clear evening to come. But we prayed for the weather to be clear, and sure enough, it didn’t rain that night.

We started lighting candles around 730pm, as more and more people started coming. One of the boys started waving at passing cars in front of my house, and I happen to live in front of a busy road. And being teenagers, the others followed suit. :\ I was quite anxious.

Anyway, I lit up my fish lantern, and we all walked around the neighborhood with our lanterns, making all sorts of noise and waving at cars. I think there were about 20 of us, at least. Quite a crowd.

In the end we all had a lot of fun, burning lanterns and waving at cars and eating and hanging around. I think they enjoyed the tour of my house, and my room. My bed got jumped on by some 5 kids or something, it must’ve been. If they were younger, I think things might have been broken. haha.

Later we celebrated the birthdays of three guys, me being one of them. So we had cake and sat around until 1030, and mom and dads came to pick their children up.

All this made me think my life is quite different than some other people my age (I’m 26 now, by the way). I hang around teenagers on Friday nights. People still think I’m in secondary school or something (the hairstylist, for example, just the other day), and I don’t have the ability to grow facial hair properly. But I’m enjoying myself and don’t really see my social life being hindered. I used to spend all my Friday nights out with friends and stuff, but I don’t know…. i guess they kind of know I’m not around on Friday so they don’t call me anymore. I do see them on other days, and I make effort to keep in touch with them. Especially on worknights late sometimes or during weekend lunches. Maybe I need to get them to hang around a bunch of teenagers who get a kick out of waving at passing cars. ;)
