dumb as cats

I haven’t found any decent studies on the tendency for urban cats to run in front of oncoming cars. My observation causes me to persist in thinking that a cat does not cross a road until an oncoming car arrives to about 10 feet of distance.
By that time, the cat proceeds to dart across the tar in some kind of heroic dash, causing the driver to be in a state of shock and bewilderment all at the same time. Needless to say, there isn’t enough time to avoid a cat jumping right in front of your car. It’s as if it literally wanted to.
Call it instinct or just plain stupidity. You will find that if you return to the scene of the crime, the furball is nowhere to be found.
Oh well, just goes to show that cats are really stupid. Or at least, the one that made that mad dash in front of my car the other night really was. It should have died, because I heard that loud knock on my car. But it wasn’t there any more when I got back.
Dumb cat.
