Chicken Little
I went to see this movie last night, after much fussing and fighting over the week about how much lost time I have to endure to watch a simple movie. I actually lose more time surfing the web, but then maybe I shouldn’t call it that.
Based on various opinions of this movie, I decided to lower my expectations. It’s a kid’s movie, so it’s not like I went to watch a proverbial epic. So, I was delightfully surprised that I was thrice entertained, tickled and touched.
It’s not a complex plot. You wanna hear it? It’s rendition of an old story…
Chicken screams the sky is falling, town goes mad when no evidence is found, and he becomes the fool for a year. We find out that the sky did fall and it turns out to be aliens and the latter half of the movie is about Chicken and friends trying to salvage whatever’s left of this grim reality.
Add in the feel-y catharsis from Chicken and his dad, the camraderie of Chicken and his other loser friends, a smattering of quick liners and slapstick antics from auxiliary characters, and superb animation… wow… I was amazed that I actually got through that one. It really wasn’t too bad.
I like the fact in animations like this, Disney takes a bit more time in building characters and crafting fluid interactions between them.
I’m really glad they put Joan Cussack in there as the voice of Abby Mallard. I think she more or less represented the narrative undertone of the whole story (except for the last part where she gets… okok, I won’t tell).
Yes, I liked Fish too. He’s Kenny from South Park without dying every episode. And the fat loser pig…. was really an unique character with interesting facets (Streisand-loving 70s singalongs?). I dunno. Maybe I’ve all but lost touch of the movie world.
I once had a point in my life where I watched movies for the sake of art. And then I realized I was abstracting morals and a lot of consciousness from it. Sometimes art is good. But too much isn’t good.
I’m glad I could sort of let my guard down with this one and take a breather.
I’d watch it again. And that’s saying a lot.
