Letters from the Equator

There’s a lovely japanese restaurant hidden in the middle of Plaza Damas in Sri Hartamas, just opposite the Starbucks @ Hartamas Mall. I can’t recall the name, which is probably why it’s remained such a well-kept secret until now….. but the place is known for japanese bbq-ed dumplings, although they serve main meals like bento sets and other stuff (no teppanyaki, it’s not the ‘popular’ kind of japanese restaurant).

As far as japanese restaurants go, I don’t think you can get any more authentic than this. The chef is a japanese guy who doesn’t speak english very well, and I think he has a family here or something or married a local, but anyway, he makes great food and a lot of japanese people go there as well as us locals who have managed to find this place somehow by word of mouth.

The unagi bento set is yummy as well as the grilled salmon. But you should really try the BBQed stuff on sticks (they have a word for it in japanese but I don’t know what), they’ve got an assortment of stuff to choose from.
