Letters from the Equator

Boon’s view from here

tormenting the morning roads

I drive like a maniac. There’s no doubt about it. Even though I consider myself quite a civic-minded driver, I’m still a maniac nonetheless. My wife is witness to this fact, along with all the other folks I torment on the roads of the Klang Valley. I apologize.

I keep trying to tell myself to slow down, but at times… it’s irresistable not to swerve in and out of traffic with my tiny car. I even try to give more space between the front car and the rear car when I swerve in and out, but I think that most people have more personal space than that, especially at higher speeds.

My car isn’t all that great to drive. It’s got a good amount of body roll when cornering, has a pathetic top speed of 150kph, and can do 80-100kph in about 2 months. But it’s really quick and nimble on the low end, and I’ve added slightly lower profile grippy tires and lighter rims and sport absorbers so it doesn’t feel so wobbly around corners.

So, it’s really placid when I do straights all the time, but it gets really fun when I move in and out of traffic and run within speeds of 0 to 80kph. I love the fact that no matter how hard I push it, my fuel consumption remains a measly 14km/l.

Maybe the fact that my car looks so stock standard scares a lot of people on the road when it moves in and out of traffic in a frenzy (especially with so many reports of car accidents in the papers nowadays). But the car isn’t badly set up and I have confidence driving it. And I always observe precaution when I drive… fast or slow. And most often it’s not about going fast. It’s carelessness that kills. Wrecklessness is just another word for that, except that you’re in control of a machine.

One place I really love to take my car out to is up to Cameron Highlands. I should try to get up there one day again, since the last time I was there was before I got those absorbers changed.

Anyway, all in all… I’ll try to take a breather and just follow the traffic, even if it feels limp and lifeless. I’ll have to find better ways to occupy my thoughts.
