Letters from the Equator

Boon’s view from here

shopping for a digicam part 2

Looks like the Canon S80 is out. It looks and feels like a small brick. The lumix LX-1 looks and feels better, even though it weighs about the same. The only sucky thing is that it doesn’t have an underwater housing. I did research alternatives, such as ewa-marine’s plastic bags, but a hard case is preferable.

I did check out the Olympus SP350, and it is quite a stunning camera. Quite compact, though a bit squarish. It doesn’t have wide-angle, and I’ve heard that it lags a bit (the menus did, when we tried it out that time). But it does have a underwater casing, and some cool features like a flash hotshoe.

The best way is to buy a similarly sized underwater casing for the LX-1 and hack it to make it adapt to the LX-1’s controls, but so far I haven’t seen anyone do that.

Oh well, suggestions are welcome.
