Dad’s looking for an SLR

My dad has been shopping around for a digital SLR. He doesn’t know whether to get a branded Nikon N80 or an affordable Olympus E500 or a versatile all rounded Canon 400d.
Since I told him about used lenses on the market, he toyed around with the thought of buying a single lens kit with the body, and get a used telephoto later. But that takes time and effort, which my dad doesn’t have patience for.
Funny thing is, he’s been spending a considerable amount of time doing research on this. My dad is the type of guy who buys stuff on impulse, but I guess he does occasionally slow down to do some thought work on stuff that really matters.
I, on the other hand, can take 2 years to decide on what car to own (and piss a few people off in the process). I took almost a year reseraching on a compact point and shoot before I got the Lumix FX01.
I do want to get a digital SLR someday, but I don’t have time for photography right now (nor the money). I’m happy I bought the FX01 because I love wide angle format, and the Leica lens produces superb photos, and it has that underwater casing (which I also bought) for my scuba diving trips.
Photography is fun, but I think just taking photos needs to be supplemented with some practical outlets like scrap books or photo blogging or selling stock photos. Otherwise, it’s kind of wasted, just taking photos that collect dust.

both the nikon d80 and canon 400d are good buys! but if u also want to get an slr later, best is for him to buy the same brand that both of you are more inclined towards so that you and your dad can share lenses later…=)
Yeah…. I guess Canon is fine, though I like Nikon’s feel better. I won’t be going into DSLRs for now. It’s a hobby I don’t have much time for, but would love to do in the future. Dad’s shooting pix of birds and plants… he’s really getting into it.
