Failure
Well, I just failed the SCJP exam for Java 5. I expected as much, knowing that cramming for the exam didn’t do much good. Will I do a retake? Maybe after 5 years, when I am filthy rich, it won’t matter anymore. Or I get a higher level certification which will pay me 10 times my current salary, and then I can scoff at all the SCJP certified jocks who eat roti canai for breakfast.
Ok, rant over.
I agree that with the certification, companies can be rest assured that the certification value holds true. The Java-certified geeky coder you hired will know how keep his code running, his threads in control, his compiler happy, and hopefully produce the software you want him to write.
It doesn’t mean he will do good at writing software, nor does it mean a certified coder is better than a non-certified one. It just means you pay him a higher salary for lower initial risks (and save face for not firing people).
I decided to take the exam because I got a good deal on a Java coupon 2 years ago, and it was expiring this month. I don’t know why I wanted to get certified. It seems now of less value, since I don’t want to write code for a living forever.
Anyway, I’ve got more pressing issues at hand. I’ve left this one episode in its lonely corner, never to be seen again.

Well, you’re right there. I do scoff a bit at such certifications. No amount of certifications will do you good if you just don’t have the handson experience. It’s like saying a graduate with a fancy degree from an ivy league would be a better bet compared to someone with a flawless track record of his 10year working experience. Just my 2 cents
DOn’t get too worked up over it. I don’t really know of many who have certifications as such and they seem to be doing equally well if not better than those who do
Chin up, mate!
