Love at first bite
Barely 3 weeks old and I’ve finally got the Alfa bite. Not as in driving fun bite, but as in my cooling fan not kicking in as it’s supposed to.
It started a few days ago, when I heard odd wheezing noises coming from my engine bay. It sounded like a belt gone wrong, which after some phone calls, decided it was the aircon belt. That wasn’t a big problem, since the belt doesn’t cost much.
Then, it occurred to me that the compressor may be off…. and that costs about RM700. That’s the price you pay for keeping cool in the car. But I bear in mind it’s a 6 year old car.
After a panicky temp rising incident today, I stopped by the gas station. My Alfa friend came to my rescue and got a tow truck to bring it to the only Alfa mech open today - Dino’s workshop in Puchong.
This led to us discovering that the fan was geriatric, and to get a new one in would cost about RM900. Dino temporarily fixed the problem by hardwiring the fan circuit to the mains which starts the fan when the car starts, not to be triggered off by the relay. In plain english, he just made the fan spin all the time. It used to only come on at certain temperatures.
I still have to get the fan replaced, though. And to be honest, I’d be quite happy to replace it. It’s kind of like getting a new car, part by part. I know it sounds absurd, but… the car deserves it. It really has soul. Gotta keep that alive.
