Letters from the Equator

Boon’s view from here

building a home

I mentioned recently that I’ve finally picked up the keys to our apartment, the dearly long-awaited home-to-be for my wife and I. We’ve been looking forward to the community, to the surroundings (IKEA!), to the loftiness of the 21st floor, and dreaming about what to do with the space.

I am deeply inspired by progressions of interior decoration spurned by mid-century modern architects. Clean lines and clearly functional spaces and furniture are its strengths. Flickr’s mid-century-modern group is a good repository of sorts.

I’m almost tempted to start a clean slate by flushing the whole room with solid wood flooring. Cost is holding me back, but there’s a price tag you can’t put on sentimental value of a home… and that’s what I’m trying to apply here.

Anyway, I’m considering taking paid leave all the way up to the New Year’s… and use that time to shop for Ikea furniture. Specifically Ikea, because by next year, I won’t get the chance to have 24 month interest-free payments.

Note to self: How exactly do you divide between items where the 24 month interest-free applies, and items that don’t?

One of the few things I’ve been considering for awhile now is the long-adored EKTORP sofa… possibly in 2-seater form. Just gotta love those fluffy cushions.

The other dandy thing I want is a spray faucet called HJUVIK (like, Huh-JOO-VIK…. just kidding). It costs RM700 here, but RM1000+ in the US… still, it’s expensive for a faucet, and expensive for a spray, and expensive for me, anyway. I want it.

Yet another thing is the MOLGER mirror cabinet. I actually like the whole MOLGER series. I don’t know why. It’s the Ikea thing.

I do want something else that Ikea doesn’t sell…. BEAN BAGS! They go for about RM150 a pop at some retro interior shop in MidValley. They’re absolutely fabulous things you can put in a living room. I want one.

Finally, paint. I’m thinking of a white-ash gray/blue tone… with large mirrors to take advantage of the height and relatively busy landscape of our Bandar Utama highways (and byways). I’m not sure how I’m going to pull that off… but it’s worth every ounce of me to try.

Wish me luck.
