I want to fly again – benefits of having a scheduled life
December 28th, 2006 by boon
I’ll be going to Bangkok soon… and it’s no surprise that I’ve been travelling a fair bit in the past year.
Port Dickson in May with my colleagues
Work trip to UK in June
Baybeats concert, Singapore in July
Training up in Genting in September
Bali diving in late September
London work-holiday in November
I do get tired from travelling, especially having to schedule my work and other stuff properly before and after my trips. I think that’s the most stressful part about it. Of course, if I had a cushy job, I wouldn’t have to worry about all these things. But I don’t think I have a cushy job.
I went out for dinner with a good friend of mine the other night, whom I haven’t seen for a long time. He works as a trainer for work productivity and management courses, and he was telling us about the GTD (getting things done) system which he bases most of his material on.
I’m definitely a big fan of GTD and its derivatives (mostly from lifehacker.com). Hopefully when I move into the new place (more about that later), I’ll be able to set up my organizing system properly.
I got into an argument with my wife about planning yesterday, and it’s true that I’m afraid of committing to specific dates for my own personal activities (she was upset that I didn’t specify a date to move). I guess what I fear the most is a rigid lifestyle that holds me down more than sets me free.
I do see the value of having an organized life. I just have to look at it from the right perspective to avoid complications of too many things.
My challenge now is to move into the new place well before I leave for Bangkok. Then I’ll have the peace of mind to fly.
