Moving house - Chalkboard wall
I want a chalkboard wall. No, I NEED a chalkboard wall. And all I need in order to get that is chalkboard paint… which is unavailable in this country, or I haven’t tried hard enough.
Needless to say, it’s quite frustrating when I spend about half of my life in front of a computer, and can only connect to the real world via web search. I’m now desperate for ways to find things via other means but will still return instant results.
Thanks to groups of bloggers and like-minded people, I managed to find some DIY method of creating chalkboard paint. Chalkboard paint is different than regular paint because it’s got a smooth finish that allows you to write on it and erase easily. Some people have even managed to get a layer of magnetic paint on the wall before putting on the chalkboard paint, although the magnetic paint was reported to be a bit grainy and uneven so should be avoided if a really smooth finish is desired.
As a summary to the DIY article, all I really need are:
- acrylic paint (6)
- water based glazing medium (2)
- powder tile grout (1)
These are all mixed at a ratio of 6:2:1.
Now if I can confirm that either Ah Seng’s hardware shop or Ace Hardware carry these items, I should be good to go.

Benjamin Moore makes a chalkboard paint, let me know if you want me to send you a gallon
hi karen, do they ship to malaysia?
I really think it’s a good idea! I think it’ll look very nice too. Let me know if you need a hand to help paint the wall with the special paint.
I haven’t seen any places that will ship internationally, but I can pack it up well and send it to you, if you’d like. Or if there’s anything else you’d like from here, just let me know.
let me think about it… customs here is especially ruthless and idiotic. they will stop a can of air if they can get their hands on it.
Hi there
Do let me know if you manage to find chalkboard paint here!
we’ve been looking for one ourselves, for our kids room…
Thanks.
Just wanna ask, did you manage to do ur chalkboard wall using ur DIY technique ? Was it successful ? Or did you manage to buy chalkboard paint ? Coz i kinda wanna do it for my house .. hee
Um, I haven’t tried it. I got lazy. I did paint one section of the wall deep red, though. It uses a glossy finish and is darn impossible to get an even coat on an uneven surface. My poor wife went through 4 coats, and it still looks kind of “off” under certain lighting, if you look at it funny.
Chalkboard wall should be worth trying. Take a picture and let me know how it looks!
