Parenting: not just yet, but look!

I chance met an old friend at a chinese restaurant the other day. His wife is six months’ pregnant, and I can see the joy in their eyes as they await the arrival of their newborn child.

We were chatting over MSN earlier about “our turn”, which is quite a common topic of conversation for asian married couples who… er, don’t have children yet.

So, yeah. We’re not ready for it. But soon, we would be joining the family camp.

I came across this really cool article written by Kori from the band, Mates of State, which I really like (the band, not Kori). They have a 2 year old kid, and are still writing songs and touring all over the world. And these days, it’s not uncommon to find all sorts of living arrangements where urban couples have to juggle their time between work and parenting.

Nannies and maids used to be more a lot more affordable 20 years ago, and technology was out of reach. Today, it’s the other way around.

But the exciting part about urban parenting is that you really grow up with the child. And I think that’s such a paradigm shift from the 9 to 5 hectic work lives, where-does-all-that-time-go, watch your favourite soaps, go to bed and do it again tomorrow.

It’s that human element in all of us.

And weird that in today’s culture of consumerism and experience-centered lifestyles, babies and children don’t come into our conversations very often.

But they’re fascinating things.

So much so that there are so many websites that celebrate all of that, like the one where Kori posted her article. I’m just scratching the surface here, but both my wife and I are increasingly noticing friends who are getting their first child, some of them preparing for their second…

It’s somehow signaling the winds of change.
