Settling Down in London
M&S dinner, originally uploaded by jaremfan. We’ve just moved into a rented studio in Islington, a short walk away from Holloway Nags Head. It’s got a separate kitchen and washroom, which is essential. I’ve seen studios where the shower room is next to the bed, and I don’t know how people can live in that kind of environment.
Still, it is a small place, and when LL toasted a muffin in the oven this morning, I was having chocolate dreams from the smell coming from the kitchen.
The outside is nice though. Oddly, it feels like half a basement living in there. You see, there’s a concrete patio just outside, and it’s a private area - sealed from an outside door with lock and key. But there’s a set of stairs that go down about a meter to the bedroom entrance. LL likes it for its novelty, and I suppose I haven’t seen anything quite like it.
Because the place is so tiny, we’ve managed to furnish it up quite a bit with a few hundred quid worth of Ikea. I could probably do a customer spotlight feature with the number of Ikea items I have here. I’m trying to make the most of available space, by adding augment racks, door hangers, textiles and carpets to brighten up the place. I always imagined you should start small when learning how to make your space more personable, and I think I’m still right on that. I had a lot of trouble doing up a place that was too big… but that also takes more money, which I don’t have.
There are a lot of affordable shops around the Holloway area. It is indeed a lot more convenient to live in Zone 2. I’m at least 20 minutes away from school, by foot-bus-tube-foot. Camden Town is a short bus ride away. So is Finsbury Park. So is my uni.
I quite like it here in North London.
