A few said it’s Streamyx. A few said it’s undersea cables damaged because of the earthquake in Taiwan. Whatever it is, it’s not getting any better. And I’m not even on a Streamyx line. The whole office is experiencing a crawl.

Malaysia steals engadget “brand”

Engadget is a pretty cool blog that keeps up with device trends. It’s just plain distasteful that someone has ripped off its good name and set up a shop in Midvalley with the same name, same font, same logo:

Just like the Friendster cafe in Damansara Perdana.

What did Engadget (the blog) think? Well…. not too highly of it.

WordPress themes

I know the current Hemmingway theme looks nice and presentable, but because of it’s pure simplicity, I can’t manage eye-catching photos onto the front page without botching up the presentation format.

I chose to go with Hemmingway for a quick fix, until I find a proper theme for my blog, or end up making one myself. I think things will look better once I add photos and other links like a blogroll and stuff.

One other fun thing to play around with are Wordpress plugins. I haven’t tried Movable Type, but from what I hear, Wordpress is the bomb. I can’t agree more. I use Wordpress for my team’s blog at work, and I find it amazingly super.

I wanted to give Typo, a Ruby on Rails based blog engine, a go… but after I played around with Wordpress and figured the ubiquity of PHP will give me less headache in the long run, I decided to stick with WP.

What’s good about Wordpress?
- simple, clean, interface
- lots of cool plugins, easy to install and modify via the web
- lots of cool themes, also easy to install and modify
- built with PHP
- runs well on apache and MySQL
- lots of people using it already

What’s bad about Wordpress?
- you need to be a bit technically inclined to work with the plugins and modify the themes
- it’s open source, so you may not get the same level of support as some of the other blogging engines
- it’s built solely for blogging, harder to get it to do other things
- could have better built-in imaging functions, but plugins will resolve this

Anyway, do expect some changes to take place on the blog…. I’ll be playing around with themes from time to time.
